They will feed you statistics on teenagers killed in drunk driving crashes, without mentioning how many of those were killed by drunk cops and other criminals over 21. They use these crashes as an excuse to promote bigotry and injustice against everybody under age 21, no matter how mature, how innocent or how responsible. On 30 October 2009, a member of the New Hampshire Legislature was arrested for drinking under age.

MADD is the false opposition to drunk driving. They are working for their corporate sponsors, some big names in the auto industry. These companies make money when drunk drivers smash cars. They lose money when drunks walk home and then start demanding crosswalk lights and plowed sidewalks, and zoning changes to favor pedestrians. They lose when people take the bus, due to suspended licenses or to avoid that fate, as the ridership allows bus companies to extend their hours and routes, making cars less necessary. There is political power in numbers, and MADD’s corporate sponsors want to minimize the numbers of pedestrians clamoring for fairness. Any serious DWI crackdown would increase those numbers, and pedestrian power.

After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Louisiana National Guard could have saved more lives and restored order sooner if they had more Guardsmen, but why should Mr. and Mrs. Twenty sign up to protect your life and your property when you won’t vote to protect their right to drink? If you team up with MADD, you will have only yourself to blame if a disaster strikes, and you suffer for want of Guardsmen.

On 2 March 2006, a drunk driver in Burton, Ohio, age 47, with eleven prior DWI’s, was driving drunk, driving left of center, speeding, driving under suspension and leading police on a chase (but at least he wasn’t drinking under age) when he crashed head-on into a car with three teenagers (but at least he wasn’t buying for them). While he accumulated his eleven prior DWI’s, MADD pushed for sting operations, keg registration laws, and counterfeit-resistant ID’s to try to make it difficult for innocent, responsible drinkers younger than 21 to exercise their right to drink the beverage of their choice, and harsher punishments when they do exercise that God-given right. Grace Chamberlain, 18, and Andrew Hopkins, 18, were killed. They never got a chance to drink legally.

Outraged Hiram College schoolmates went to Columbus to lobby the Ohio Legislature for a tougher repeat offender law. Sen. Timothy Grendell introduced SB 17, which passed overwhelmingly as was signed into law. They didn’t need MADD and neither do you.

If the courts strike down 21, lawmakers will have to scramble to pass tougher drunk driving laws that will save lives. That differential in punishment is now being meted out to innocent, responsible drinkers under 21 instead of the drunk drivers.

So what can you do? Like the Hiram College students, you can
press legislators to crack down on drunk driving, instead of restricting the freedom of innocent persons to drink the beverage of their choice. More drinking, maybe, but less drunk driving...and equal rights for walkers. You can also urge local radio stations to play the RADD PSAs. A technical note is important here: The PSAs are actually hard to find on that site, and the shorter list of new PSAs is easier to find but has less selection.
